The immutable God

We pride ourselves in our ability to change. We pride ourselves in our ability to be flexible. Why, because we know in our hearts that we are flawed. We desperately need to change if we are ever to get better, improve, and be a better version of our selves. Like athletes striving to be faster, stronger, and smarter. It is truly a good thing. But we all know someone that does not have to change. He does not want to change and it is for our eternal blessings and benefit that He will not change. He is immutable! (Psalm: 102:27, Malachi 3:6) He is our God!

Of all the attributes of God this is the one we often fail to mention. However imagine if it were not true. Imagine if our God who is love (1 John 4:8) were not immutable. Perhaps He would love us today but tomorrow change His mind. But regardless of our failings, regardless of how we might change He continues to love us. Sometimes our love grows cold for God and even for others in our lives, but God’s love continues the same. He still desires to save us, care for us and be with us forever.

God is omnipotent. (Genesis17: 1, Revelations 19:6) Meaning He is all powerful. What if God could grow weak? The safety of the entire Universe would be at stake. Yes this would be ridiculous, because no matter how bad things get, God is still all powerful and in control. Often we look at all the evil in the world and question if God is in control, but we must remind ourselves that God has given us freedom from the very first day of creation. Therefore we have the freedom to fail, do wrong and in the worst case be evil! But this is because God chooses to give us free will. It matters to us, because it allows us to pray with faith trusting that He can do it, if He wills! (Matthew 8:2)

God is Holy. (Exodus 15:11, 1 Peter 1:16) How grateful are we that this will never change? That we will never wake up to find that God has decided to join the party and become evil. We certainly do not need an all powerful God who wants to cause harm.

We could continue to discuss all of Gods amazing attributes, but none of them would matter if we could not trust that He will never change. His love is amazing, but more amazing because it will never grow cold. His power is awesome, but more awesome because He will not grow weary. His Holiness is glorious, but even more glorious because it will forever be the same!

  1. We know our God is unchanging, always the same as He alway has been. We read the in Scripture, our Lord is yesterday, today, tomorrow always the same. The Lord changes us gradually, from the inside. God does not see as man sees. He sees our heart. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He leads us to change.
